Dear Mrs. Ward,
I really enjoyed the book, Rope Burn by Jan Sielbold. When I first picked up the book, the title grabbed me and I wanted to read to find out more information. I chose the book because it looked interesting and a friend of mine suggested that I read the book.
One of the main characters in the story is Richard. Richard is a new student in school. In gym class he is facing a challenge to climb a rope. He is worried that he will be humiliated in front of the whole class because he has never successfully climbed a rope. Just when Richard thought he couldn’t climb the rope, James, a student in school, came to his rescue. James was in Richard's PE class. He befriended Richard and helped him learn how to rope climb.
Richard is a new kid at the school. His plan is to keep a low profile while he becomes familiar with the school. His plan is working well until his PE teacher announces that the students have to climb a rope in gym. Richard panics knowing that he has to climb in front of the whole class, and worse yet, Richard cannot climb a rope. In his other school the students were not required to climb a rope. James notices that Richard is worried and introduces himself. He is also his neighbor. He invites Richard to his house to look at his tree house. James has a climbing rope to get into his tree house. James gives Richard some tips on climbing. Each day Richard practices. When he has to climb the rope in class he is able to climb to the top thanks to the assistance of his new friend.
There are many lessons presented in the story Rope Burn. One message that the author wants us to learn is, if you never try you will not succeed. At first, Richard knew he could not climb a rope in gym class. He didn’t think about practicing rope climbing. James taught Richard how to climb, gave him a rope to practice on, and encouraged him until he improved. Since Richard practiced he was able to climb the rope and was not embarrassed.
Student can relate to the story Rope Burn, especially students that have been the new kid at school or students that have worried about not being able to complete a task. I really enjoyed the story. I liked it because it had a serious lesson and some comical moments. A question I have is, will Richard help other students learn to climb the rope in gym class?
Sincerely,
Student in class
