Week 1 - October 15 - 19, 2012 - Second Quarter
This week we started a new book report project. We went to the library to pick books. The report is a historical book report project. Due Nov. 28th.
Tuesday and Wednesday - We are participating in a mathletics competition. This will last all morning on both days.

Friday the students will have parts and read a play.

- We will use reading strategies to help improve fluency and comprehension.
- Students will continue to choose and read, 'just right' books in class and at home.

- This week we will be reading a Reader's Theater play. We will read to improve fluency, rate, expression, and presentation.
- Students need to have a good fit, 'just right' book in class each day and their reading notebook. If students read at a high level, it may be hard to find age-appropriate books that are at their reading level. It is fine for them to read books from the 5th grade and above that are appropriate for them. We have been discussing in class that books are great to read even if you know all of the words. I recommend that students look for 'power words' in stories. I call power words, good, descriptive words in writing that you want to incorporate in your own writing and speaking.
- Students will read and continue to take AR test (short computer test) over the books that they read.
Week 6 - September 24-28, 2012 (No school Monday!)
- Students will be reading their choice, 'just right' books and practice using the reading strategies we are learning.
- I will read with individuals using small books from the Story town series to assess reading fluency and comprehension.
- Students will take computer AR tests over the books they are reading.
- We will start to review parts of speech.
